Having determined our economic Vision for the future of the district, the challenge before us is to make sure it happens.

To this end, Lancaster & Morecambe Vision Board has established six themed steering groups, each of which is taking responsibility for driving forward a range of aspirations within the Vision.

The steering groups are:

Transport

Culture & Pride

The Environmental Economy

Employability & Skills Development

Business & the Knowledge Economy

The Visitor Economy

Each group is chaired by Vision Board members but membership comprises those stakeholder organisations with an intrinsic interest in the sector concerned, together with officers of the City Council, the County Council and other statutory bodies with specific responsibilities in these areas.

The membership of all the groups, together with the Vision Board executive, comprise the newly designated Economic Development Partnership, itself one of the building blocks of the Lancaster Local Strategic Partnership.

Having determined and agreed the Vision in mid-2006, we produced an Economic Investment Strategy and Action Plan, a hefty tome which puts forward the argument for investment in our district and sets out a number of distinct projects which we wish to pursue.

The Economic Investment Strategy identifies over £1bn of planned and desired investment into Lancaster & Morecambe over the next 10-15 years, the majority of which will emanate from private sector developers and investors. However the Strategy also identifies a number of areas where public investment is sought, totalling £100million over the course of this long-term developmental period. Lancaster & Morecambe Vision Board, together with Lancaster City Council, will be working hard over the coming months and years, lobbying and campaigning for investment in the district.

£7,434,385 of funding has been allocated by the Northwest Regional Development Agency into Lancaster & Morecambe for 2007/08. A large proportion of this is earmarked for the development of the Lancaster Science Park, considered to be fundamental for the transformation of the district into a 'knowledge economy'. This sum also includes the last phase of investment into the Midland Hotel restoration, due to be completed in Autumn 2007. The remainder will be spent on feasibiity studies and market analyses across a variety of projects, all outlined in the Vision, which will set the scene for further development of our local economy.

These are exciting times for Lancaster & Morecambe. We have a renewed ambition and strategy for economic development. The 80 or so people involved in the Economic Development Partnership share a clear Vision for our beautiful district and are determined to see us make great strides in terms of our reputation and performance over the years ahead.
